Is Greed Still Good?
Wall Street (1987) still stands as one of my favorite Oliver Stone movies. And this is the first time Stone has ever directed a sequel to one of his films. While I am skeptical this follow-up film will be of the same caliber as the original Academy Award-winning film that doesn’t mean it won’t be any good – just different. I think too many fans and film critics make the mistake of comparing a film so much to a book or an original that they don’t allow themselves to enjoy the film for its own entertainment value and merits. By the trailer I’ve seen, Wall Street 2 seems like a distinct film from its predecessor, yet it looks very exciting and engaging. Though Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) may be older and less conniving, the charm of the character still seems there in this film.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps is set 23 years after the events of the first film in the year 2008, just before the stock market downturn, which Gekko tries to warn others of to no prevail due to his lack of credibility in the financial world. Gekko then decides to rebuild his relationship with his estranged daughter, Winnie (Carey Mulligan), who avoids her father since she blames him for the suicidal death of Rudy her brother (played by Stone’s son in the original film). Gekko then agrees to help a young Wall Street trader named Jacob Moore (Shia LaBeouf) – Winnie’s fiancé – to catch the person responsible for his mentor’s death in return for his help in catching his daughter’s love again.

Wall Street 2 will be released on April 23, 2010 and will also feature a cameo appearance by none other than Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen). While greed may not be good, here’s hoping this sequel is.
